Firefox. I am not one of those Microsoft bashers. I use lots of their software products and think it’s the best out there. And because of the virulent anti-MS crowd, I usually ignore those clamoring to use another product. But enough of the experts were touting the Firefox browser earlier this year that I decided to give it a try. Occasional use grew to constant use and now if I’m on another computer where Firefox isn’t installed, I’m just plain frustrated. Why? Internet Explorer is just inferior. The best thing about Firefox is the tabbed browsing; I usually have 5-10 tabs open at home and in the office at any given time. I also like Firefox because it shows me my coding errors on my webpages. IE is very forgiving (which has its advantages), but I figure that if I get it right in Firefox then for sure it will look good in IE, but certainly not the other way around.
I wrote about some of my other favorite programs earlier this year.
Yes, FF is great! Its DOM Inspector is a must-have for anyone building websites. That said, I’d have to say that IE7 gets my premature vote for my favorite program of 2006. Why? It’s promising to make RSS approachable to the average user. Also, it will have better standards compliance (fewer CSS quirks, proper PNG support, etc) and a better tabs implementation than FF. Also, it won’t be as much of a memory hog as FF.
Firefox is the best. I’ll warn you, though, that what looks good in FF will often not work in MSIE. This I have learned from painful experience.
Well, I am a bit embarrassed, since I have never heard of the DOM inspector. I just went and looked online for an explanation and I’m not sure how convinced I am about its usefulness to me.
The worst part: I just finished a year’s worth of work on a new website today. It’s done (I think). And I never knew about this tool. Am I a loser?
I’m going to wait a few more days before announcing the new site.
As for RSS in the browser, I like a separate reader, but maybe this will make it easier for those who don’t.
Can’t wait for you to announce your new site!
(You’re not a loser. People read your blog. The DOM Inspector is great for hacks like me who regularly run into problems with their CSS.)
