America’s Greatness

By | January 12, 2012

James Montgomery Boice:

“The greatest sin of all is that we take glory to ourselves instead of giving credit to God. When we do well we think it is our achievement. When we do badly we think it is somebody else’s fault. It is the perspective of fallen humanity, and what we do as individuals in the leading of our daily lives we do nationally. America has known real greatness. It has been greatly blessed financially, culturally, spiritually, and in many other ways. But instead of giving glory to God, from whom such blessing comes, we boast of our achievement, assuming that it is because we are the kind of people we intrinsically are.”

“The history of humanity is (1) the raising up of a nation by the blessing of God, (2) men and women taking glory to themselves, and (3) God tearing them down in order to show that he is the Most High God and not mankind. That will happen in America. I believe it is happening already. It will happen to a greater extent unless we repent.”

The Kingdom of Heaven

By | January 8, 2012

I quote John Piper for this only because I heard it this morning in listening to the audio book of Finally Alive. He gives classic expression to what most Christians think about the “kingdom of God” or the “kingdom of heaven.”

Jesus said to Nicodemus in John 3:3, ‘Truly, truly, I say to you, unless one is born again he cannot see the kingdom of God. ‘ He was speaking to all of us when he said that. Nicodemus was not a special case. You and I must be born again, or we will not see the kingdom of God. That means we will not be saved; we will not be part of God’s family, and we will not go to heaven (p. 25).

The part I want to focus on is the last clause: to see the kingdom of God is equated with “going to heaven.” My contention is that the only way that one comes to such a conclusion is by ignorance of the Old Testament.

I would not deny that an extraterrestrial heaven exists, and I am not addressing the issue of salvation at all. My problem rather is that many Christians have defined “kingdom of God” and “kingdom of heaven” based on non-biblical ideas.

When Jesus spoke of the kingdom of God/heaven, he wasn’t speaking out of a vacuum. That concept was defined for him and other Jews of his day by God’s previous revelation in the Old Testament. The clearest explanation, and one that Jesus was no doubt very familiar with, is in Daniel 2. It is the kingdom of heaven because it comes from heaven, not because it is located in heaven.

Daniel 2:44–45 (NIV) “In the time of those kings, the God of heaven will set up a kingdom that will never be destroyed, nor will it be left to another people. It will crush all those kingdoms and bring them to an end, but it will itself endure forever. 45 This is the meaning of the vision of the rock cut out of a mountain, but not by human hands—a rock that broke the iron, the bronze, the clay, the silver and the gold to pieces.

What is Sin?

By | January 4, 2012

John Piper’s description is one of the best I have heard. This is from the beginning of his summary of Romans 1-7, which you can read or listen to here. I know it’s tempting to skip over a quote or a list, but if you have a few minutes, I believe you will find this profitable to your soul.

<Begin quotation>

What makes sin sin is not first that it hurts people, but that it blasphemes God. This is the ultimate evil and the ultimate outrage in the universe.

The glory of God is not honored.
The holiness of God is not reverenced.
The greatness of God is not admired.
The power of God is not praised.
The truth of God is not sought.
The wisdom of God is not esteemed.
The beauty of God is not treasured.
The goodness of God is not savored.
The faithfulness of God is not trusted.
The promises of God are not relied upon.
The commandments of God are not obeyed.
The justice of God is not respected.
The wrath of God is not feared.
The grace of God is not cherished.
The presence of God is not prized.
The person of God is not loved.

The infinite, all-glorious Creator of the universe, by whom and for whom all things exist (Rom. 11:36) – who holds every person’s life in being at every moment (Acts 17:25) – is disregarded, disbelieved, disobeyed, and dishonored by everybody in the world. That is the ultimate outrage of the universe.

Why is it that people can become emotionally and morally indignant over poverty and exploitation and prejudice and the injustice of man against man and yet feel little or no remorse or indignation that God is so belittled? It’s because of sin. That is what sin is. Sin is esteeming and valuing and honoring and enjoying man and his creations above God. So even our man-centered anger at the hurt of sin is part of sin. God is marginal in human life. That is our sin, our condition.

<End quotation>

The entire sermon is only 37 minutes long and if I told you it was free today only, more of you would download it than if you know that it is always free.

Most of our family cheers for the Green Bay Packers and Aaron Rodgers (see photos here). Gunner isn’t a fan, but he sees wisdom in an interview with the quarterback who led his team to 19 straight victories.

At the risk of being made fun of, I must say that I was impressed with this video which describes the making of “In Your Arms” video with 288,000 jelly beans over a span of 2 years.

It’s not only me. Someone else said that Andrew Peterson’s Behold the Lamb of God is “one of the best all-original Christmas albums in the last couple of decades.” I refuse to buy the companion book for it until such a day as I decide that I’m not going to write one myself.

Exiting pastor saddles church with odd worship leader – Let’s just say that you won’t believe this.

I fly out tomorrow for three weeks of teaching/guiding in Israel. I’d appreciate your prayers.

How To Get Rich Quick

By | December 20, 2011

I have some financial advice for you: invest your money in the place that earns the highest dividends. Forget those 1% CDs, and don’t bother with bonds that are averaging 2%. The stock market historically does better, so I’d start looking there. What you really need is a stock that pays dividends frequently. Ideally, you should invest in a stock that pays a large percentage every day. I don’t know what stock does that, but as I’m pretty confident that this is a good strategy.

You ought to do the same with your time. Invest your time in that which pays daily dividends. I do have a suggestion for you here. Memorize Scripture. You don’t have to wait until you finish memorizing to be rewarded; you receive rewards every single day.

A new year is about to start. I would encourage you to make a firm commitment to memorize a lot of Scripture this year. There are many great places to go. You might choose a short but real practical book like James. You could do a powerful section of Scripture such as Isaiah 40-48 or Revelation 1-5. I’ve been spending my time lately in the Psalms. It has been amazing. I’m a rich man. You can be rich too.

Not All Israel Are Israel

By | December 19, 2011

A verse that has been used more than once by those trying to convince me that the church replaces Israel in God’s eternal plan is Romans 9:6:

For not all who are descended from Israel are Israel.

What I am supposed to understand is that it is not physical Israel that receives God’s blessing but spiritual Israel (the church).

They then go to Romans 2:29:

A man is a Jew if he is one inwardly; and circumcision is circumcision of the heart, by the Spirit, not by the written code.

Physical circumcision is irrelevant and the only Jews who are saved are those who are in the church. We can thank Paul for clearing this up for us, lest the Old Testament lead us astray.

The reality here, however, as in so many other places, is that Paul is entirely consistent with the OT. When Paul wrote the words quoted above, he was merely explaining what prophets like Jeremiah had already said (9:25-26).

“The days are coming,” declares the Lord, “when I will punish all who are circumcised only in the flesh— Egypt, Judah, Edom, Ammon, Moab and all who live in the desert in distant places. For all these nations are really uncircumcised, and even the whole house of Israel is uncircumcised in heart.”

The prophets knew that not all Israel was Israel, that not all who were physically circumcised were spiritually circumcised. Yet they could still say, as Jeremiah did:

This is what the Lord says, he who appoints the sun to shine by day, who decrees the moon and stars to shine by night, who stirs up the sea so that its waves roar— the Lord Almighty is his name: “Only if these decrees vanish from my sight,” declares the Lord, “will the descendants of Israel ever cease to be a nation before me (Jer 31:35–36).

How can this be? How can the whole house of Israel be uncircumcised and yet be promised that they would never cease to be a nation before God?

The answer is not that Israel would be swallowed up in the church and forever cease to exist. The answer is that:

On that day a fountain will be opened to the house of David and the inhabitants of Jerusalem, to cleanse them from sin and impurity (Zech 13:1).

The answer is that in the future God will grant spiritual circumcision to those who are physically circumcised.

The LORD your God will circumcise your hearts and the hearts of your descendants, so that you may love him with all your heart and with all your soul, and live (Deut 30:6).

In this way God will receive great glory. This may not be how we would do it, but it is how God designed it. As Paul concluded his own study of this very topic, he wrote:

Oh, the depth of the riches of the wisdom and knowledge of God! How unsearchable his judgments, and his paths beyond tracing out!…To him be the glory forever! Amen (Rom 11:33-36).

Amazon Link

By | December 2, 2011

A friend just asked if I have a link for Amazon whereby I get commissions. I do. If you access Amazon either by this text link or the links below, I receive 4% commission on any purchases with which I can do good things. It costs you nothing extra. In other words, if you use my link, the 4% comes to me; if you don’t, you ‘re giving it to Amazon instead (and if you own a LOT of stock, maybe that’s a better move :-)).

You might consider adding this link to your Bookmarks or Quick Links bar.

I didn’t mean to abandon this blog. I guess it’s just been a variety of things. The main thing is the revision of my photo project as well as a secondary photo project. It’s the quantity that’s killing me.

I am “tweeting” more, so you can subscribe to that if you know how. (I put “tweeting” in quotation marks because it’s still not a comfortable part of my vocabulary.)

If you’ve ever wondered where that airplane flying over your head was coming from, now you can find out. Amazing.

This infographic shares 9 Things To Know about Amazon.

Have I recommended using OpenDNS before?

I went to a conference earlier this month. An old teacher I saw told me that every week she thinks of me when watching the star on Burn Notice. (I bet you never thought I was so cool.)

One of the sessions I attended at the conference was a presentation by Michael Vlach on “New Testament Use of the Old Testament: A Survey of Where the Debate Currently Stands.” If that’s your cup of tea, you ‘ll find the article quite helpful.

Israel Trip

By | November 13, 2011

I’m leading a fantastic group of people from our church on a two-week trip to Israel from April 21 to May 4. We ‘ve had a number of late dropouts and we now have 4 open spots. The trip will be mentally and physically demanding. A free 10-week course will precede the trip but is not required for people outside the DFW area. If you or someone you know is looking for an intense, everything-but-the-exams trip, get in touch with me asap. Total cost is an amazingly low $3,640, including airfare from DFW. (If flying from elsewhere, you could buy your own ticket and receive a discount of $1,600.) We ‘ll be staying in the Old City, at En Gev, and at Yad HaShmonah.
