{"id":1232,"date":"2010-12-20T21:07:49","date_gmt":"2010-12-21T03:07:49","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/toddbolen.com\/blog\/2010\/12\/20\/handels-messiah\/"},"modified":"2010-12-20T21:10:34","modified_gmt":"2010-12-21T03:10:34","slug":"handels-messiah","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/toddbolen.com\/blog\/2010\/12\/20\/handels-messiah\/","title":{"rendered":"Handel&rsquo;s Messiah"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I &#8216;ll always remember this Christmas season as the one in which I learned Handel&#8217;s <em>Messiah<\/em>.&#160; By that I don&#8217;t mean that I sang it in a choir.&#160; I do mean that this was the first time I sat down and listened carefully to it in order to understand it.<\/p>\n<p>If you &#8216;re interested in doing so, I would recommend two things as essential: a good performance (either live or recorded) and a program that lists all of the words.&#160; I have never been to a live performance, so I do not know if it is customary for them to provide detailed programs.&#160; I put one together that you can access <a href=\"https:\/\/toddbolen.com\/Handel's Messiah lyrics handout.pdf\">here<\/a> if you would like.<\/p>\n<p>You can find additional help in understanding the Messiah by reading this recent book by <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/exec\/obidos\/ASIN\/0802865879\/713713713-20\">Calvin R. Stapert<\/a> (<a href=\"http:\/\/christianaudio.com\/free\/\">audiobook free<\/a> until 12\/31 but this is a harder book to listen to) and\/or reading his interviews with <a href=\"http:\/\/thegospelcoalition.org\/blogs\/justintaylor\/2010\/12\/15\/handels-messiah-an-interview-with-calvin-stappert\/\">Justin Taylor<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.albertmohler.com\/2010\/12\/07\/the-meaning-of-handels-messiah-a-conversation-with-calvin-stapert-2\/\">Al Mohler<\/a>.&#160; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sbts.edu\/documents\/icw\/messiah.pdf\">Daniel Block&#8217;s article<\/a> is also helpful.&#160; [True story: I ordered Stapert&#8217;s book from Amazon in the morning and it was on my doorstep that afternoon.
