{"id":928,"date":"2009-10-23T20:38:23","date_gmt":"2009-10-24T01:38:23","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/toddbolen.com\/2009\/10\/23\/christian-academics\/"},"modified":"2009-10-23T20:38:23","modified_gmt":"2009-10-24T01:38:23","slug":"christian-academics","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/toddbolen.com\/blog\/2009\/10\/23\/christian-academics\/","title":{"rendered":"Christian Academics"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>This blog post says better than I could a number of things that have grieved me in recent years.&#160; If you &#8216;re teaching or planning to teach the Bible, please read it.&#160; If you &#8216;re thinking of sending your child to a &#8220;Christian college,&#8221; please read it.&#160; If you &#8216;re considering beginning a seminary education, please read it.<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"http:\/\/blog.9marks.org\/2009\/10\/beware-your-seminary-professors.html\" href=\"http:\/\/blog.9marks.org\/2009\/10\/beware-your-seminary-professors.html\">http:\/\/blog.9marks.org\/2009\/10\/beware-your-seminary-professors.html<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Just one clip:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>In the Western secular academy, one of the highest values is an open exchange of ideas without pre-judgment, a value which has clearly transmitted into Christian academic circles. Yes, there should be a place for Christians to openly consider new ideas, but consider the anthropology behind that democratic value: it assumes (these days, at least) that people are rational, objective, and basically good. When this is our starting point, we feel free to say whatever, whenever. An elder has a very different starting point. He knows that his sheep are weak and susceptible to temptation and self-deceit. Like a parent, he knows that intellectual growth is highly intertwined with spiritual and social maturity. So he takes great care in what he says and does not say. He&#8217;s not nearly so democratic.
