    Though it might not seem like an insult when you just look at the numbers (especially from a normal-income perspective), I think if you translate into our world how the Yankees handled the situation, it’s pretty clear that how the Yankees treated Torre was disrespectful, manipulative, and underhanded considering the way he’s handled himself, his team, and the pressures of New York for 12 years. The entire baseball world is on Torre’s side. Doesn’t make $5 million worth any less, but it does say something.

    I’ll agree with Gunner here. Sure, $5 million is nuts, but it’s small change compared to the team’s overall payroll. That said, I’m guessing the $3 million bonus would be for winning a World Series, winning manager of the year, etc. Those all would be within his grasp as the Yankees skipper.

    Torre probably figures if you are going to take a paycut, you might as well go to a place less stressful. I’m sure other teams would give him a comparable offer, without insisting on a World Series win year after year after year.
