Petition: Freedom of Choice Act

By | November 11, 2008

One of the most damaging things that Obama could do as president is to sign the Freedom of Choice Act.  He has promised that the first thing he ‘ll do in office is to sign it.  This bill would wipe away every restriction on abortion nationwide.  This would eradicate state and federal laws that the majority of Americans support, such as:

  • Bans on Partial Birth Abortion
  • Requirements that women be given information about the risks of getting an abortion
  • Only licensed physicians can perform abortions
  • Parents must be informed and give consent to their minor daughter’s abortion

What can you do?  You can sign this petition.  Perhaps if enough people do, Obama will listen.

The act has to get through the Senate first and unless the Dems win all three of these races (http://www.bradblog.com/?p=6645) the Republicans can (and will) fillibuster this all day long.

Nevermind there remain socially conservative Democrats out there, myself included.

I have my doubts this Act ever will reach Obama’s desk.

This Act isn’t something he can create with an Executive Order, of which there will be plenty.

Plus, Pelosi (an avowed liberal) has all but asked Obama to run from the center-left position. Why? Because any attempts to go all-out liberal will be met with a crushing blow to the Democrats in 2010 and a one-and-out for Obama in 2012.

If this Act is passed, it woulnd’t happen until after 2012 — assuming the Democrats still control Congress. For Obama, this first term is all about being re-elected.

Brian – so you don’t think Obama will keep his word? I hardly think that he ran for president so that he can moderate his agenda. Besides, he knows that with each election, it’ll be harder to implement what he wants, as more Republicans are elected to Congress.

FWIW, the legislation has been sitting in Congress for four years, never even making it past committee. I also think you are going to have plenty of the states rights groups voting against it on principal. I just don’t see this one making it to Obama, much like the laws that Clinton promised during his first two years (when he had a Democratic Congress) — namely the universal healthcare act.
