If you’ve heard of The Shack, you probably know it’s been a #1 bestseller on the secular booklists for a long time. It’s been widely praised by some prominent Christians, but I’m told it has some major theological heresies. If you ‘re looking for a helpful analysis of the book, I’d recommend a pastoral panel at Bible.org (video and mp3). I have not read the book, nor did I attend the panel session (which was at our church). But I know the individuals on the panel and believe they are trustworthy.

Did you hear about Obama’s nominee for Treasury Secretary? He made mistakes in filing his income taxes in 2001, 2002, 2003, 2004, and 2005. Does there seem to be a problem when one of the financial geniuses of our age isn’t even smart enough to figure out our tax laws?

I read that JPost article a couple days ago and found it intriguing as well. I am always interested in Israel’s friendlier neighbors (Egypt and Jordan) and their take on the bullies in the neighborhood (Iran and Syria). I find Egypt pretty fascinating when you look at the character Nasser and Sadat. I just finished Jerusalem in the 20th Century by Gilbert and he briefly touched on Sadat and Begin making peace in ’77, and Abdullah’s assassination just before making peace (rumor had it) with Israel in the early 50s. I would like to know so much more about the inner circle politics of Israel/Egypt and Israel/Jordan. Fascinating!
You think that this new appointment by Obama of Geithner is anything out of the norm for political figures? I recall just a couple months ago hearing the amusing tale of Charlie Rangel, head of the Ways and Means Committee (which ironically writes the tax code for us). He forgot to mention to the IRS that he received tens of thousands from a vacation home in the Dominican Republic that he rented out to people of influence. When the story came to the surface, he of course blamed it on his wife! I also heard a funny story about the guy regarding his classic Mercedes convertible. A couple days after the Dominican villa story broke it was reported that he had left his car parked in a congress parking garage in DC for years. They had asked him repeatedly to move the darn thing but of course, he was too busy serving the people. It only took an embarassing tax fraud story to get him to finally move his car. Who are these people?
