Yes, another new major English translation of the Bible. If you watch the promo, they ‘ll tell you it’s because they can’t find any they can understand. But that’s a lie. The real reason is that the publisher (the United Methodists) knows they can make a lot of money, not only from sales but also by not paying royalties for other translations. Complicit in all of this are the dozens of biblical scholars who apparently don’t have anything better to do and relish the thought of putting that they were a Bible translator on their CVs, in their personal bios, on their blogs, and in their email signatures.

I recognize 3 names on the CEB translator list (Charlesworth, Grabbe, Knowles). They’re all very bright & extremely busy. None of them needed this project on their already-impressive list of accomplishments. I’m not really up on Theology, so I’m sure the same could be said for many of the other names on the list, plus I noticed a fair diversity of church affiliations. There must be some story behind the story that I’m missing here that prompted your comment. One thing we can probably agree on is that the 3-minute promo video is pathetic, which unfortunately represents the state of mainstream “Christianity” fairly well.

No story, just a few observations. We don’t need another English Bible translation. There is a huge amount of money to be made in selling Bibles. The Bible is the best-selling book every year, with an estimated 25 million copies sold in the US alone to the tune of half a billion dollars ( link). The US has far too many scholars who are not motivated by serving the Lord, the church, or the needy.
I recognized at least a dozen names on the list and yes, many of them are excellent scholars.
However, I agree fully with Todd. We DON’T need another English translation. If somebody wants to tranlsate the BIble, they should translate it into a language that has NO Bible in their native tongue.
I think it’s pathetic that scholars are wasting their time by making another English version. According to Wycliffe Bible Translators, there are over 340 million people who do not have the BIble in their own language. There are over 100 English transltions of the Bible. And now we’ll have one more. WHat a shame.
