March 7

There’s some very impressive footage of a glacier breaking apart here. If you turn the volume down from the 35-second to 45-second mark, you ‘ll miss the swear word. (From this movie.)

What is love? Here’s a 3-minute answer.

I just read the Ten Commandments of iPad Preaching. But I don’t get it—why not just print off a sheet of paper and then you don’t have to worry about auto-lock, brightness, theft, battery power, and backups. I don’t think it will be too long before we look back on ourselves and laugh.

One day I’d like to sketch out a portrait of who I’d like to be, drawing out the strengths of others. There’s a good bit in this portrait of Howard Hendricks that would fit well there. I sat at lunch table with him once in college but I’m not sure if I ever saw him at DTS.

Do we live in a country founded by geniuses but run by idiots?

I love this: Don ‘t show off your new…oh, what an awesome cover that looks like a vintage book! No, it’s not an Apple commercial, it’s a vintage book iPad cover commercial.

I can’t imagine doing all of my Bible reading on a screen. I use the same Bible for everything, and I can remember where the position of certain passages are on a physical page. You can’t do that with an e-version.

By keeping the printer I already purchased and not buying an iPad, I have an extra $700 that I am using to very good ends.

You’re right. I did just spend $80 on a new toner cartridge. The previous one printed 8000 pages which comes out to a penny a page. Thousands of those pages were printed to help the church grow in knowledge of God’s Word, and since none of the 60 people in the class had to buy an iPad in order to read those notes, collectively we saved another $42,000 more. Some of that is going to plant a church in Colombia and some of it is going towards planting churches and seminaries in India.

My toner cartridge lasts longer than some people’s iPads and iPhones do! $80 every couple of years vs. $80 per month!

I certainly do appreciate the effort to rationalize this kind of spending since I’ve long wondered how Christians do it :-).

This seem to be something you feel strongly about. I realize there is still value for some things being on paper. However, in my situation – having bought mine 3 ys ago for 500, my annual cost of iPad use I’m guessing about $100 by the time I’m done with it. Once you subtract savings on supplies from that, I do feel like I am not too far off from your toner and paper cost, and that there is certainly a convenience and utility factor that is worth talking about. That said, if I could somehow generate $40,000 for missions by getting rid of it I would be very glad to do so.

Eric – I doubt you’re saving $500 on toner and paper, but no one can dispute that a tablet device can add other value and save in other areas, making it a good investment for some people. But pastors can also communicate to their people that an iPad is something they “need” and lead them to spend money on toys rather than on people. I doubt that most people can live with the same iPad for 5 years; apart from breakage, there’s always a new Apple that allures with its promise that when we buy we will become more like God.
